Blackhead / Kosmo Kramers Split

So, when I first started going to shows in Orlando, the first local band I saw was Stizzle. They were this crazy ska-punk band that I thought were really good. One of my friends even tried out to be one of their horn players, but ended up flaking out on them, as well as me later on in life. The reason I bring this up is that I saw them open for a "bigger" band, and after meeting them, I made the drive out to see them play at this little coffee shop out on Highway 50 that I can't remember the name of now.

Anyway, at that show I saw Blackhead for the first time. They were awesome. Pop Punk craziness, led by guys in jumpsuits and underwear on their head. The drummer would get naked and run around, the songs were silly.....good times. This was their second seven inch, and they also released a full length, which I may upload at some point.

The Kosmo Kramers were an instrumental band. Surf music. They were good, although the recording does not give them justice.

this record is so great on many levels....
1. total DIY! this record was made by our old roomate Eamon on his own bedroom label.
2. has one of Blackhead's best ever songs in "Mountain Dew".
3. has the only official recording of the Kosmo Kramers, even if it is the Kramers Mach 2, which i think wasn't quite as cool as Mach 1 with Ben in the band but still wicked rad.
4. it's a pop-punk band and an instrumental surf band on one slab o' vinyl. nobody mixes up genres like that anymore!
5. it's totally fuckin' FUN!!!!

everyone who was there at the time should own this puppy.

In 1996 I tried living in Orlando with the intentions of starting a band- which didn't work out very well.
However, I did befriend folks in Blackhead, Stizzle, and Kosmo Kramers. In fact, just recently, I came across photos that I took of both Blackhead (at a house show with The Features) and Stizzle. The Stizzle photos are from the coffee house you spoke of which was called The Grind. I also found a set-list from when two bands from Gainsville, Dirty Poodle and Peter Tuck, played there. Also found photos of them.
Anyways, I ended up homeless and never did get a decent band going but I met a lot of great people. Some good times there.

Peter Tuck was from Melbourne, a ska band, a little bit older than most of the bands mentioned in this thread than most of the local high school aged bands. Peter Tuck were very talented for their time but had career paths outside of music. they later went on to open up for the bouncing souls at the limelight in Melbourne, among many other bands that traveled down i95 towards the vero, palm beach, lauderdale, and miami DIY punk rock scenes and back i75 passing through.

The Grind was a post Spot Studio era coffee shop that hosted hundreds of florida punk bands, initially the bands that played at the Grind came from UCF and University High School just a less than three miles up the road.

Also, The Grind hosted many other Orlando suburban sprawl bands, DIY level touring artist, and is where the former winter park resident, the bass player from Kosmo Kramers first started booking DIY shows although was not the first booker or promoter there.

a few years later the guitarist / singer of Blackhead quit working at Waxtree records, a local record store to replace the kosmo kramer bassist as the head booker at DIY Records, another record store that hosted bands. DIY Records originally was a record store near the higher middle class areas of winter park which was located on Mills across the street from the original Wills pub location on 17-92. Wills pub at the time hosted post college aged local bands that sounded like seven mary three and was in its infancy, while the station and FBI hosted metal bands and downtown was the destination for was bands that were more polished at the edge, among others.

Blackhead was a local popular pop punk band from middle class suburban winter park. that cultivated its following from winter park high school.

Kosmo Kramers and Blackhead were both influential to a generation of suburban middle class teenage counter culture in the mid-late nineties. i cannot confirm or recall an instance of the terrible behavior in which any of the members of blackhead exposed themselves to a crowd at an all age punk rock show.

Stizzle was influential for the high school local ska/punk fusion genre in the local scene along with the rising of the spitvalves. during this period the spitvalves, were from Colonial high school, the rival to University high school. the spitvalves played sometimes at places like BT Grinders, a local submarine shop. Also, Stizzle's singer was bi-inguinal and brought cultural influences that were groundbreaking to the locals, these influences were from the island region.

Also, during this time, a young man from St Augustine, turned down an opportunity to play in the spitvalves to be in LTJ,at that moment of time the Spitvalves had a larger following than LTJ, while LTJ had yet to cultivate its high school following as they were slightly older whereas spitvalve were kings of the local high school punk rock scene, LTJ haven't yet made its mark in Gainesville but had experience in age of the musicians or a little more polish. Skifdank another florida regional band was beginning its origins in voluisa county. these bands bands, all of ska/punk one, at that moment of time were more skanking pickle or slapstick sounding than anything on moon ska NYC records region offered. additionally, LTJ's first show in Orlando was free and in front four people on Church Street across from cheyaane Saloon, which did not allow all agers.
